Purpose: The "Arbor Knot" is used in fly fishing for the sole purpose of tying the fly line backing to the reel spool ("arbor"). So that it is not mistakenly put on backwards, before attaching the backing to the reel, be sure to establish whether you will retrieve line (i.e., operate the reel) using your left or right hand. (For further discussion, see reels.)

|
Step 1: Take your backing and wrap it around the center ("arbor") of the reel. The backing must "go in" and "come out" above any "line guard" on the reel spool; |
Step 2:
Using the
"tag end",
tie a knot around the lower/longer running segment of the backing . . .
yes, just a regular overhand knot;
|
Step 3: Trickier now: then tie another regular overhand knot (a "stopper knot") in the end of that same "tag end" you just knotted; |
Step 4:
Trim any excess on the tag end to about 1/8th"; tighten/slide
these two knots down against the reel arbor completely by pulling on the long/running
portion of the backing.
You may recognize that this is merely a "slip knot", that along
with a stopper knot in the tag end, keeps the knot secure against the
arbor/reel.
