Purpose: The "Clinch Knot" is probably the most well-known of the knots used in fly fishing, primarily because it gets the most use. It is the most popular knot to tie the leader tippet to the fly. |

Step 1: With your right hand, run the tag end of the leader through the eye of the fly; then wrap the leader around itself 5 times . . . |
Step 2: Then insert the tag end of the leader back through the
first loop

Step 3: To tighten, pinch the tag end of the leader at the hook eye with your left hand, and slowly pull on the running end with your right hand;

Step 4:
You should moisten
the knot before “cinching it down” to avoid damaging friction.

Step 5: A variation on this knot is the "Improved Clinch Knot". It is simply adding another step for the tag end at the completion of the knot, as in:

Step 6: The last
step is to closely trim the tag end of the leader. This knot is easy, thank goodness, because you'll use it
more than any other.
