"Clinch Knot"

Purpose:  The "Clinch Knot" is probably the most well-known of the knots used in fly fishing, primarily because it gets the most use.  It is the most popular knot to tie the leader tippet to the fly.

Step 1:  With your right hand, run the tag end of the leader through the eye of the fly; then wrap the leader around itself 5 times . . .

Step 2:  Then insert the tag end of the leader back through the first loop

Step 3:  To tighten, pinch the tag end of the leader at the hook eye with your left hand, and slowly pull on the running end with your right hand;

Step 4:  You should moisten the knot before “cinching it down” to avoid damaging friction.

Step 5:  A variation on this knot is the "Improved Clinch Knot".   It is simply adding another step for the tag end at the completion of the knot, as in:

Step 6:   The last step is to closely trim the tag end of the leader.  This knot is easy, thank goodness, because you'll use it more than any other.
