Purpose: The "Nail-less Knot" is used in fly fishing to affix the backing to the fly line. It is occasionally also used to tie the leader to the fly line. |
Step 1: With the fly line laying to the right (its tag end to the left) overlap the butt end of the backing (coming from the left) about 6"; using your right hand, make a loop in the backing and lay it on top of the fly line as shown;
|
Step 2:
Pinch on the left side of the fly line with your left hand, where the two pieces overlap ; using your right hand, from left-to-right, wrap with
the tag end of the backing around the inside of the formed loop and the fly line 5-7 times,
(keeping it inside the loop);
|
Step 3: Tighten the backing onto the fly line pulling on the tag end and the running end of the backing simultaneously;
|
Step 4: Before
tightening, carefully slide the knot toward the end of the fly line to avoid
having to cut off fly line waste. Here's the preliminary result you should look for in
your nail-less knot:

Step 5: Look at this again from a different perspective; maybe this animation will help . . .
|
Step 6: The
last step is to trim both the tag end of the backing and the fly line
(always try to keep cutting a fly line to a minimum.)
