"Duncan Loop Knot"

Purpose:  The "Duncan Loop Knot" (also known as the "Uni-Knot") is a specialized knot that allows you to keep an open loop in the leader, just in front of the fly.  This tends to promote more freedom of movement between the fly and leader, and for some flies and presentation situations may be an advantage.

Step 1:  Hold the fly in your right hand and place the leader tippet through the hook eye as shown;

 .

Step 2:  Pinch the leader at the hook eye; use your right hand, make a lower loop as shown, and begin to wrap the tag end of the leader around itself and the inner loop;

Step 3:  Wrap the tag end around both lines 5 times, keeping it inside the lower loop;

Step 4:  To tighten this knot, while holding the end of the leader in your teeth, pull on the running portion of the leader with your right hand and the fly with your left,

Step 5:  Lastly, adjust the size of the loop as you are forming/tightening this knot; we suggest a loop size no larger than about 3/4 the length of the fly you are using; then trim the tag end closely to the knot;

Step 6:  This is not a permanent knot.  When a fish strikes your fly while using this knot, most of the time it will slide down to the eye of the hook, closing the loop and eliminating the movement of the fly.  To re-set the loop, you need to readjust the knot. (Here's a simulation of the fly action using this knot.)

Give this knot some practice, particularly as to forming a loop the size you want and tightening it so it stays open while casting, fishing, etc.
