Knots by purpose/function: backing-to-reel ~ backing-to-fly line ~ leader-to-fly line ~ leader-to-leader ~ leader-to-fly ~ loop knots ~ specialty knots |

Purpose: The "Uni Knot" is used in fly fishing as an alternate method of tying segments of leader material together. It is used by some as a substitute for the "Blood Knot" and/or "Surgeon Knot." |
Step 1: Hold the existing/"old" mono segment in your left hand, and with your right, overlap it with the "new", thinner diameter segment about 8-10"; |
Step 2:
With your left hand, pinch the two pieces together
near the middle of the overlap;
using your right hand, make a loop in the "old" segment below the "new" as
shown;

Step 3: Wrap the tag end of the "old" mono back through the loop as shown 4-5 times (thicker mono requires fewer wraps); ![]()
|
Step 4: Tighten this side by pulling the tag end with your right hand while holding the two pieces together in your left hand; pull both the tag and running line sections of the material to cinch down the wraps; ![]() |
Step 5: Do the same thing on the "other side" of this knot, using the opposing/"new" mono, but wrapping in the opposite manner you did on the other side; tighten it up the same way; ![]() |
Step 6: The last step is to slide the two knots together and then trim the tag ends of both sections of material.
