National Fishing in Schools Program

Rod Outfits

The "Fishing in Schools" program is designed to provide the correct education, training and equipment to students taking its curriculum.  Our goal is to have students be successful and enjoy the sport.  To do this properly, the fly or spincast rods, reels, lines and leaders must be appropriate for and accommodate the beginning  fisher.  These outfits are provided with the Curriculum Kit.  Individual outfits may be ordered from our store, NFSP Online Store.

Orvis Streamline Rod Outfit

The rod outfits that are provided as standard equipment in the program are selected for just these purposes.  Rather than use a "one-size-fits-all" approach (which isn't as effective) we have chosen two distinct sizes and styles of fly rod outfits to be the most suitable for the beginning caster (these are employed in the "Cast A Fly, Catch A Student" form of the curriculum.  The companion, "Cast A Lure, Catch A Student", will use spincast rods.)

  • For middle schools . . . we use the Orvis Streamline Junior Rod Outfit
This is the standard rod outfit the "Fishing in Schools" program uses for its fly fishing curriculum in middle schools.  It is the same great Streamline starter rod-and-reel outfit for adults, but with a slimmer, shorter grip to make it easier for the junior angler to hold. The outfit includes a Streamline 7'9" mid-flex fly rod (the perfect length and weight for smaller frames), a Clearwater III reel, 5 wt. weight forward fly line, fly-line backing, and a fly-fishing leader.
  • For high schools . . . we use the Orvis Streamline Rod Outfit
This is the standard rod outfit recommended for high schools for the "Cast A Fly, Catch A Student" curriculum of the "Fishing in Schools" program.  The fly rod and reel combo is specifically designed for the junior angler. 8 1/2', 5 weight, Mid-Flex rod is the perfect length and weight for most students. Rod features smaller and shorter grip tailored for smaller hands. Clearwater® III Reel. 150 yards of 30 # Dacron® backing. WF5 chartreuse floating line and a 9' 2X leader.
