National Fishing in Schools Program
Middle School & High School Program
The
"Fishing in Schools Program" is designed to teach
young people how to fish in schools. It properly
prepares them for outside activities in the future.
Its "Fishing in Schools" curriculum is
specifically targeted to grades 6-12, in both middle
schools and high schools across the country. The
companion "Learn How To Fly Fish" curriculum
is designed for colleges and universities.
"Fishing in Schools” is a “pilot-to-national” program designed after the National Archery in Schools Program. Like the archery program, a 3-tiered "teach-the-teacher" system is used. This process ensures standardization, simplicity and ease-of-deliverability. The parent organization is the Fishing Education Foundation (FEF), a non-profit 501 (c) (3). The National Fishing in Schools Program (NFSP) is a registered trade name of the parent. FEF enlists support from the private sector and the industry in the form of monetary as well as payment in kind contributions. FEF provides grant matching funds to schools to facilitate participation. 100% of funds go towards fishing education in schools. The immediate objective of NFSP is to teach students in grades 6-12 not only how to fish in Physical Education classes, but also about fish, water, insects and the out-of-doors. The NFSP is administered as an “in school” program. The School of FlyFishing, a fishing education partner of NFSP, provides the “Cast A Fly, Catch A Student” (flyfishing) or "Cast A Lure, Catch A Student" (spincasting) curriculum, lesson plans, units, equipment, training and support.
