School Qualifications

Outlined below are the general qualifications for schools to be suited for the National Fishing in Schools Program. (For more specifics on qualifying, see requirements.) Our intent is to provide the curriculum, training and equipment to as many middle schools and high schools as possible. Schools may purchase the program outright, perhaps partner with other schools in their area or apply for grant funding from our parent, the Fishing Education Foundation:

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
1. Outdoor education emphasis desirable
2. Lifetime skills focus
3. Gender neutral participation
4. Cross-curricular opportunities
GYMNASIUM
1. Suggested minimum size: Width: 50', Length: 75', Height: 22'
2. Target system uses wall space (50' uninterrupted), or free standing on gym floor, or outdoors
GRADES 6 - 12 & COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY
1. Middle School "Cast A Fly, Catch A Student" curriculum geared toward grades 6, 7 & 8
2. High School "Cast A Fly, Catch A Student" curriculum geared toward grades 9, 10, 11 & 12
3. College & University curriculum, "Learn How To Fly Fish", is designed for higher ed
DEMOGRAPHICS
1. Schools with a 20% or greater minority demographic receive preferential evaluation for grant funding from the Fishing Education Foundation
2. Gender neutral program
3. Not restricted by physical limitations
TEACHER APTITUDE
1. Some fishing experience helpful
2. Fly fishing experience not required
LOCAL RESOURCES
1. Availability of suitable water for fishing as a day outing is preferred
2. After school fishing assistance advantageous - ask about our Mentor Program with partnering fish & wildlife agencies.
