"Specialty flies" . . .     what does the term, "specialty fly", mean?

This is our term to help learn about this type of fly.  It is not a commonly used term otherwise.

Practically ? . . . "specialty flies" refers to those flies that don't fall into the other, "normal" classes (dries, wets, nymphs or streamers.)

  • These are flies designed to imitate a very specific food type or are "attractor" flies designed to gain attention.  For purposes of instruction in this course, examples of specialty flies would be flies to imitate mice, fish eggs, leeches, frogs, worms, etc.
  • We also "lump" into this category stream/lakeside land-based insects often referred to as "terrestrials" (e.g., grasshoppers, crickets, ants, etc.)
