Description |
Purpose |
1. |
Set aside 20 minutes |
go outside; no overhead problems |
practice with 50' in front & 50' in back |
2. |
Warm up with Stage 6 |
always "pick up where you left off" |
get back to where you were |
3. |
Let line slip through line hand |
The only difference between this step and the last is that you do not let go of the fly line, you let it slip through your line hand on the forward cast |
By not letting completely go of the line, you retain control of it at all times, thus ensuring no energy-robbing slack to creep into the cast, nor inability to react to a strike by a fish |
4. |
Slide the line hand over |
As you let the fly line slide through your line hand on the forward cast, bring the fly line over to the rod and place it into the finger of your rod hand on the grip |
This fluid motion ensures that before the fly line and fly hit the water, that you regain control of the fly line in your rod finger; otherwise, you have no control over the line |
5. |
Get timing down |
the proper point at which to begin to let the fly line slip through your line hand can be gained only through trial & error |
by trying different release points during completion of the forward power stroke, you will eventually determine exactly the right timing |
