Preparation |
Description |
Purpose |
1. |
Set aside 20 minutes |
go outside; no overhead problems |
Practice with 50' in front & 50' in back |
2. |
Warm up with Stage 4 |
always "pick up where you left off" |
Get back to where you were |
3. |
Add 5' of fly line |
Add about 5’ of fly line; or get 4 lengths of the rod, or about 35' of line, in front of the rod tip |
You need a little more fly line to create a “pile” |
4. |
Create a “pile” |
With the fly line held against the rod grip by your finger, use your line hand to pull back about 5’ of fly line through the finger ; this extra line lays loosely in a pile between the reel & your finger |
When your line hand is done making the pile by retrieving line, put it away in your pocket; do not use it again until the next repetition of this exercise |
5. |
Make a regular cast |
Keep the fly line tight against the rod grip and the pile “as is” as you make your backcast |
Make a regular cast…remember: pick up, backcast, forward cast, letdown (no falsecasting here) |
6. |
“Shoot line” |
As you complete the forward power stroke by accelerating the rod tip to an abrupt stop, let go of the fly line with your finger of the rod hand |
This will “shoot” the fly line out of the pile/reservoir as it is pulled along behind your forward cast |
7. |
Regain line control |
as you complete the forward power stroke & let down, grasp the fly line in your line hand & place the fly line in the finger of your rod hand |
This allows you to retain control of the fly line as you begin to replenish your pile to re-do the exercise with the next cast |
8. |
Repeat |
Re-do steps #1 - 6 |
Enables you to see the mistakes, mis-timing, etc.; go back out & try again; return to the basics |
