Description |
Purpose |
1. |
Set aside 20 minutes |
go outside |
practice with 50' of open area in front & 50' in back |
2. |
Repeat Stage 3 |
pull fly line off the reel that is about 3 times the length of the rod (about 30’) & get it out the rod tip in front of you on the ground |
use a constant length of line to practice with; approximately 30'; do not use your line hand |
3. |
Practice false casting |
a continuous application of the full casting stroke without stopping; keep the fly line tight against the rod grip with your finger |
Practicing a false cast mostly helps your “stroke timing”, so you begin to “know” when to stop your backcast and begin your forward cast; work at establishing a constant, steady, repetitive casting stroke with symmetry in both back & forward casts |
4. |
Practice regular cast |
by "regular", we mean one complete casting cycle: i.e., just one backcast, followed by the forward cast releasing the line and ending in the let down |
this will add the elements of the pick up & let down to your practice session |
5. |
Alternate |
switch back & forth between false casting and regular casts |
practice making perfect; this helps gain confidence in creating the casting loop and improving timing by recognizing when to stop and start the rearward and forward power strokes |
