Here's how to setup and use fly lines in teaching flycasting in
the Cast A Fly, Catch A Student curriculum:

Fly lines come pre-wound on your fly
reels.

They are the appropriate length to
fit the size of the rod and reel provided.

A major key to teaching the proper flycast is to be certain the caster uses the correct amount of
fly line for the basic cast (so that the right amount of weight
is available to bend/load the rod as the cast is conducted)

As is stated in the curriculum, for
a general guideline, the amount of line to use is about 3 times
the length of the fly rod (this "rule of thumb" includes the
leader)

To assist you and the student in
knowing how much line to use for casting, the fly lines should
be "color coded"; some lines may already have this color coding;
if not, follow the instructions below to mark them yourself in
this manner:
