Wading staff
The wading staff is a safety device that becomes a wise option for fly fishers when they wade in deep or strong stream/river current conditions. Like a "walking stick", a wading staff can be any long (at least to your shoulder height) sturdy material that will help steady and support your weight when wading in a stream or river. Commercially available wood, aluminum or graphite staffs are all good, some are telescoping. Your experience will tell you pretty quickly when you see or enter a river whether or not a wading staff is needed. You should not need this tool until you have learned how and where to wade safely and successfully. Normally, the wading staff is attached to a lanyard or retractable device that is hooked to the "D-ring" on the back of the vest. When wading in deep water, the staff will float and hopefully remain out of your way until you need it to steady yourself astream |
