Wading socks
Socks made specifically for wearing with waders are another item of clothing that adds to the comfort and effectiveness of fly fishers. They are not mandatory, but they do add to one's enjoyment, particularly when you wadefish a lot. For these purposes, we are talking about 2 types of socks: (1) socks worn over your bare feet (and underneath/inside your boot or stocking foot waders); (2) socks worn over your stocking foot waders (and inside your wading boots or shoes.) There are several different styles and materials available for wearing over your bare feet. All are designed to be worn inside stocking or boot foot waders. There are socks available as "liners" (usually polypropylene), cushioned synthetic/combination fibers; fleece, and "Gore-Tex". The primary feature of this type is their absorption capability ("wicking"), so that your feet stay dry; some have insulating properties that add warmth. (Handy to have when you wade in cold water for long periods of time.) The socks made for wearing over your stocking foot waders are generally made of closed cell neoprene. They are most useful with nylon-foot stocking foot waders or when "wading wet" with boots. Some have the added function of serving as "gravel guards". Either style provides a certain measure of cushioning as well as insulation from cold water. Some are designed to be "breathable", which allows moisture to pass through to further contribute to warmth and dryness. For the beginning fly fisher, you do not need these type of socks to go fishing . . . as "any old sock" will get you by; but they are sure nice to have on the old feet.
