Wading cleats Wading cleats are an accessory worn over wading boots to provide greater traction in slippery, dangerous wading situations. They are strictly a safety item. Wading boots, with interchangeable soles, are also available. There are essentially 4 different types of "strap on" wading cleats: but whether they are strap-on cleats, rubber or felt soled "sandals", or chains, the purpose and use are the same: strap them over your boots when you need maximum safe-footing in dangerous wading conditions. A few manufacturers are also providing boot foot waders, and some wading boots, with permanent or removable "studded soles", usually ceramic or tungsten. Wading cleats are not usually an item of equipment a beginning fly fisher would need. We would advise against (and recommend avoiding) the demanding and difficult stream conditions that require the ultimate measure of safety that cleats provide. However, when encountering very rocky or slick boulder bottom streams, or very fast, heavy current, wading cleats are very functional and add significantly to your surefootedness. Most cleats accommodate a wide range of sizes, almost a "one-size-fits-all" product. When you find the need to invest in a pair, we suggest getting the best you can locate . . . as they do need to perform reliably in order to make the difference between safe and unsafe wading. |
