Tackle, including fly rods, reels, lines and leaders, are not covered in this course.  There is a separate course for each of these topics.

Tippet Dispenser

Another useful item to have in your vest is what we call a "tippet dispenser".  Its purpose is to hold and make easily available your most-often-used tippet sizes so that you can repair or lengthen leaders as needed.

Tippet dispensers are available in a few different styles: some are designed to hold 2-4 individual tippet spools that you buy "by diameter"; others provide individual spools onto which can be wound your preferred tippet materials; when you use up the materials, just replenish the spool(s) from your bulk stock.

We suggest for the beginning fly fisher that a relatively inexpensive, “wallet” style dispenser, holding individual spools of the 4 diameters most common to their type of angling, is the best with which to start.  For most freshwater fly fishers, particularly those fishing for stream trout, leader tippet spools in sizes 3x, 4x, 5x & 6x are likely to be the predominate sizes to carry.

For specifics on leaders, tippet materials, their selection and use, see the section on Leaders.
