There are 5 criteria by which fly rods are classified:
1.  Rod length
2.  Rod weight
3.  Rod action
4.  # Pieces
5.  Material

The outline below describes each of the criteria used in classifying fly rods.  For detailed information on each, click on the specific criteria.

What the criteria means . . .

Length . . .

the total length of the rod from the butt to the tip

Weight . . .

fly rod "weight" correlates a rod with its corresponding optimum fly line weight with which the rod is matched

Action . . .

refers to the flexing characteristics of the rod
Pieces . . . the number of separate sections that fit together to make the whole rod
Materials . . . what the rod "blank" is made of
