Retractables
The "retractable" is also known as a "zinger", "pin-on-reel", "retriever", or "retractor". They come in a variety of sizes to serve the purpose of holding various tool/accessories. They are pinned, hooked or clamped to the vest. These are handy items to keep frequently used tools easily available, yet out-of-the-way. They use a spring system which allows you to pull out the stored cord, wire, etc., (usually 15"-30") that will automatically "retrieve" itself back into the case. Common uses are to attach items such as a net (shown above), clippers, forceps, etc. Some retractables are made to handle two items with one reel. Durability is a key factor, as you want these to remain reliable with frequent use. "Cable" or wire will generally be expected to last longer than elasticized cord. As we caution throughout this text, although the retractable is an effective device, it does add weight, so don't overdo them. One or two on a vest seems to accommodate most fly fishers' needs. |
