Fly Reel Costs
What should I expect to spend

Outlined below is a compilation of fly reel price ranges.  They are provided as a guideline only.  When selecting a reel as a beginner, try to avoid buying more reel than you need.   The more costly reels usually contain workmanship and features that justifies their price.  But keep in mind that such reels may be less durable than less expensive models, particularly in the single action styles, and that if you aren't going to use a feature (which increases the reel's cost), don't buy it.

The chart below includes a representative range of spool diameters, reel weights, line capacities and prices for single action and multiplying type reels currently found in the marketplace.  Data is organized for 3 distinct rod/line weight categories: "up to 5 weight"; "6 to 9 weight"; and "10 to 15 weight".  (The chart does not include automatic reels, because we do not recommend that style of reel for flyfishers.)

As notable from the chart, fly reels are not inexpensive.  For the most part they are simple machines that do not require a lot of attention to maintain them in satisfactory condition.  However, like any tool, they are not "maintenance free", and require some periodic care to prevent potential problems and to protect their value.

Let's review some of the "do's & don'ts" in regards to care and maintenance of fly reels:
