Fly casting practice . . . Stage 2: Yarn it, butt too |
|
As in learning to ride a bike, I will gain confidence using "training wheels . . . |
Equipment needed for this practice: complete rod, yarn, sponge, chair | |||

Preparation |
Description |
Purpose |
1. |
Set aside 20 minutes |
go outside |
need some open space, on grass (not water), no overhead obstacles, little or no wind, no audience; daylight |
2. |
Take out all rod sections from the rod case |
no reel is necessary yet |
after starting out with a shorter rod, go to full length |
3. |
Tie the yarn to the tip |
use just a simple knot |
return to simulation casting with the yarn on both horizontal & vertical planes |
4. |
Repeat Stage 1 |
get started with Stage 1 (use the sponge!) |
get a feel for where you are; note how easy it is to “flip” the yarn by accelerating the rod tip to an abrupt stop |
5. |
Add rod butt section(s) |
after 5-10 minutes, add the rest of the rod pieces to form the complete rod |
move up to casting with the full length rod; concentrate (watch) the loop you form on both back & forward casts |
6. |
Continue your practice stroke |
Cast "overhand", "sidearm" & "parallel" . . . on various planes |
by casting in different "planes", you get a better feel for a proper casting loop & gain confidence in your stroke |
7. |
Practice from a chair |
Sit in a chair & practice casting; don't lose the sponge |
this exercise takes the lower body out of the casting equation; it requires the arm/forearm/wrist to do the work |
