Matching Leaders To Rods & Flies
As we have reviewed in the previous pages, it is important that leaders balance with the fly rod, the fly line and the range of fly sizes being fished. The chart below is meant as a guideline that will perform well under most fresh and saltwater fly fishing conditions. There are variations to these lengths and tippet sizes that would also work successfully, particularly in saltwater fly fishing situations. And, as is covered elsewhere in this text, other leaders, both longer and shorter, will balance well also; it is the tippet size/diameter that is the most critical factor in matching the size of the fly you are fishing. (For detailed specifications on how to tie the individual leaders, click on any that are underlined.)

* Freshwater . . . for purposes of simplification for this chart, we generalize that tackle used for freshwater fly fishing excludes 10-15 weight rods/lines, and flies larger that 1/0. ** Saltwater . . . for purposes of simplification for this chart, we generalize that tackle used for saltwater fly fishing excludes 3-5 weight rods/lines, and flies smaller than #4.
