Lentic zonation . . . these are areas of standing water ("stillwater") ponds and lakes, that are primarily "depositional", i.e., they gather siltation; they are characterized by the presence of 3 distinct zones, as depicted below.  Insect numbers will be highest in the "littoral zone", with some concentration of specific species found in the "limnetic" zone.  The "profundal" zone is the least populated by insects.
