Tackle, including fly rods, reels, lines and leaders, are not covered in this course.  There is a separate course for each of these topics.

Hook hone

The hook hone (or hook sharpener) is a small, inexpensive tool that can make a big difference in improving your "catch rate" when fly fishing.

The hook hone is a simple, small, diamond or ceramic faced tool, that clips to or stores in your vest or shirt.  Its purpose is to:

1.  sharpen hooks;
2.  remove/prevent small rust deposits on hooks;
3.  some are combination sharpener/hook disgorger

The best-disciplined fly fishers "touch up" their fly hooks periodically.  This may be done before each use, or "batch processed" at home on a rainy /off-season day.  Such attentive anglers also check their fly's hook after each fish is caught & released, after a "hang up", or whenever the hook is believed to have hit or caught on something that might dull or alter a straight, sharp point.

A fly hook that is other than straight and sharp will result in less-than-ideal hooking capability.  A straight, sharp hook point promotes easier penetration on the catch and easier removal on the release.

The use of this simple tool will go a long way to more fish being caught and your flies lasting longer.
