Tackle, including fly rods, reels, lines and leaders, are not covered in this course.  There is a separate course for each of these topics.

Forceps

One of the most indispensable tools of fly fishers is the "forceps", or, in doctor-talk, “clamp” or "hemostat".  This is a "don't be caught dead without it" item.  Most fly fishers just clamp them to their vest or shirt so they are always available.  (Usually on the side opposite their dominant hand.)

You will find this simple, inexpensive device to be invaluable in all kinds of situations:

1.  getting the hook out of a fish's mouth:
2.  getting the hook out of a piece of clothing:
3.  getting knots out of your leader;
4.  tying knots;
5.  picking up small stuff;
6.  depressing the barb on flies (to render them "barbless").

Forceps are commonly available in 4" to 7" lengths.  Our preference is a length of 5 1/2", with a curved end, which serves a wide range of applications.   Oversize finger holes are helpful, especially when wearing gloves.

Get yourself one or more of these tools (right after you get your first fly rod, reel and line  . . . and before your first flies.)
