Tackle, including fly rods, reels, lines and leaders, are not covered in this course.  There is a separate course for each of these topics.

Do-it-yourself kit

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is one item of equipment that should be on all fly fisher's mandatory "checklist".

We recommend that a small first aid kit be placed in the bottom of your "ditty bag" and remain there at all times.  Or, if not there, in someplace that is guaranteed to be with you every time you go fishing.   It should not be relegated to remember in our normal decision-making process before any given outing, i.e., "What do I need to take with me today?"

For general use, this needn't be anything overly fancy or expensive.   For years, we have carried a small, "Sportsman's First Aid Kit" (ours is Johnson & Johnson) that is about 6"x8"x2".  It has served our needs well in day fishing excursions.

When taking extended journeys such as fly-in fishing, horseback or floatfishing wilderness trips, we create a "trip-specific" kit that covers our various risks.  If you do not intend to provide your own on such adventures, it is prudent to be sure that someone in the group, or the outfitter, has an appropriate first aid kit.
