Fly Casting Basics

A standardized approach taught in the National Fishing in Schools Program

This segment is designed to teach the fundamentals of a sound flycast.  The graphics and descriptions are geared toward the needs of the beginning to intermediate flycaster.  In that most freshwater fish are caught within 30-40 feet of the caster, establishing a casting stroke that consistently and accurately meets this need should be the initial goal of all casters.  After the basic principles of a sound cast are firmly established, it is from there we can expand our skills by exploring advanced techniques that enable us to make longer casts.   Even those students, whose fishing will be mostly saltwater, where longer casts are advantageous, will benefit by starting with the principles outlined in this segment.
